Well it’s been a year since the new law went into effect. Many remember the TV onslaught by the insurance industry claiming passage of R-67 would drastically raise everyone’s rates and would do nothing to help consumers win disputes with their insurance company. It turns out just the opposite happened. A December 4th article from the Washington Public News Service contains comments from the Washington State Insurance Commissioner about the effect of the new law. In the article, Commissioner Kreidler states some insurers have increased training for their adjustors to avoid problems under the new law. "If that’s one of the outcomes of Referendum 67, that is very positive from the standpoint of consumers – that they’re dealing with better-trained adjusters who are going to make the determination on their particular claim." Regarding the tactics used by the industry to scare consumers about large rate increases, those appeared to be false. Although Commissioner Kreidler said it was too early to truly judge the effect of the new law, the threats of increased rates don’t appear to have come true. All in all, the Commissioner appears pleased with the effect of the law and the increased clout it gives consumers who have claims unfairly delayed or denied.
